Caltrans has announced significant lane closures on southbound Interstate 5 near State Route 56 in San Diego, scheduled for overnight on Monday, July 20, 2026, into Tuesday morning. This closure is necessary for essential asphalt repair, ensuring the longevity and safety of the freeway infrastructure.
The closures will affect multiple lanes, including the southbound I-5 between SR-56 and the I-805 split, the southbound I-5 bypass, and the westbound SR-56 connector to the southbound I-5. From 8 p.m. on July 20 to 5 a.m. on July 21, only one lane of the southbound I-5 will remain open, while the I-805 will be fully accessible.
Motorists are advised to take alternative routes during this period, as the work zone will require reduced speeds and heightened alertness. The westbound SR-56 drivers are provided with a specific detour route, involving exits at El Camino Real/Carmel Valley Road and Del Mar Heights Road, to access the southbound I-5.
